The esteemed game development studio responsible for the acclaimed 2016 Doom revival and its highly praised successor, id Software, is in the process of recruiting for another immersive first-person game. It has been a span of more than three years since id Software unleashed the celebrated Doom Eternal, which garnered effusive accolades and even secured a nomination for Game of the Year at the 2020 Game Awards. Regarded as one of the paramount FPS titles in gaming history, Doom Eternal has left an indelible mark.

In the wake of Doom Eternal's final DLC, The Ancient Gods Part 2, which arrived a year later in 2021, fervent fans have embarked on a voyage of speculation concerning id Software's next creative venture. With The Ancient Gods providing a fitting conclusion to the Doom Slayer's narrative arc, and fellow Bethesda studio MachineGames demonstrating adept stewardship over the Wolfenstein franchise, enthusiasts have turned their attention to prospects like Quake and possibly even Rage as potential realms id Software might explore next. Given the relatively modest acclaim garnered by the latter, a Quake reboot has gained traction as a compelling contender, especially following the impressive remaster of Quake 2.

Clues concerning id Software's forthcoming endeavor may be emerging, as a recent job listing appears to shed light on the genre of their imminent project. Posted on LinkedIn, the studio is seeking a Senior Weapons and Prop Artist. Notably, this role stipulates that the candidate should possess experience in contributing to and shipping at least one first-person game. It raises intrigue as to why id Software is seeking such a position at this juncture. According to the conventional timelines of AAA game development, production for the studio's subsequent release would typically have commenced shortly after the launch of Doom Eternal three years ago or following the unveiling of The Ancient Gods Part 2 DLC in 2021.

Additionally, the job post alludes to the inclusion of vehicles. Intriguingly, Rage is the lone franchise from id Software that incorporates vehicular gameplay. While not beyond the realm of possibility, it's doubtful that id Software would incorporate vehicles into either the Doom series or a potential Quake revival. Such franchises have historically been anchored in meticulous player movement and comprehensive first-person arsenals. This potentially points to either Rage 3 or an entirely novel intellectual property. However, given the lukewarm reception to Rage 2 in 2019, it's challenging to envision the esteemed studio revisiting the Mad Max-inspired, post-apocalyptic shooter.

The job listing also alludes to the team's pursuit of crafting AAA-grade games, hinting at the possibility that id Software might be concurrently developing multiple projects with distinct internal teams. This, of course, remains speculative. With no official confirmations forthcoming from id Software, Bethesda, or Xbox, enthusiasts will need to exercise patience to learn more about the studio's highly anticipated next FPS venture. A potential unveiling of the new project could occur in the upcoming year, as it will mark four years since the triumphant launch of Doom Eternal.
