Three garages, three different diagnoses – until I found the right one

Man what a headache this has been. My Q5 started making this grinding noise when shifting from park to drive, only on cold starts. First garage said new gearbox needed, quote 18k. Second garage said it's just low on fluid, topped it up, noise came back after two days. Third garage said maybe the torque converter. I was about to just sell the car honestly. Then a coworker who drives an RS3 told me to look for a Certified Audi Transmission Abu Dhabi specialist because apparently these ZF boxes have specific diagnostic procedures that regular mechanics skip. Took it to the place he recommended, they found a faulty solenoid valve within an hour, replaced just that part, and charged me under 1500. Car's been perfect for three weeks now. Just goes to show that the right knowledge matters way more than how many shops you try.
