Front clunk on an A6 is very often a worn control arm bushing, a drop link, or a top mount, and none of those need a scanner at all. A decent mechanic finds it on a lift with a pry bar in ten minutes. If a shop starts talking about "diagnostic platforms" for a suspension knock, I'd be a bit suspicious.

Does the clunk happen over bumps, when turning the wheel, or when braking? That one detail narrows it down a lot. Also, which year and is it air suspension or standard steel springs? Air struts are a totally different price bracket.
