I'm still trying to wrap my head around the concept of freie Beweglichkeit, this idea that's been floating around the movement world lately. It's like, we've been told to just "move freely" for years, but what does that even mean? I've been doing this work for a while now, and it's only recently that I've started to think about it critically.

Widersprüche in der Bewegungsauffassung

Freie Beweglichkeit is often pitched as a way to tap into our natural movement patterns, to get in touch with our inner bodies and move without restriction. But what if our bodies are actually wired to move in very specific ways? I mean, think about it – we're born into a world where we're forced to adapt to gravity, to a specific environment, and to a certain set of physical limitations. It's no wonder that our movement patterns are shaped by all these external factors. And yet, when we try to move "freely", we're often encouraged to ignore all these constraints and just let go. But what if letting go isn't actually possible? What if our bodies are constantly negotiating with gravity and our surroundings, even when we think we're moving freely? It's a weird paradox, and one that I think gets to the heart of the whole freie Beweglichkeit debate.

Für einen pragmatischen Zugang

I'm not saying that I think freie Beweglichkeit is a total myth or anything – I think it can be a useful tool for some people. But I do think we need to be more careful about how we define it. Rather than just assuming that we can all move freely, I think we need to start by acknowledging the specific constraints that are shaping our movement patterns. Only then can we start to work with those constraints, to see how we can move within them rather than trying to ignore them. It's a more nuanced approach, maybe, but one that I think is ultimately more helpful for people who are trying to develop a more embodied sense of movement.
