When I think back to the recent Indonesian film, Silence - From A Distance (2026), one thing keeps resonating with me - the almost haunting quietness at its core. It's as if the director, Aldi Asrar, decided to strip away the noise, leaving only the bare essentials to tell a story about two sisters living under the same roof. Not that the film is without sound altogether, of course. In fact, the silences are often punctuated by the creaking floorboards, the hum of a refrigerator, or the occasional distant rumble of a vehicle. But it's the silences that truly get under your skin, like a gentle but insistent whisper.

The Unspoken Tensions

These silences aren't just a narrative device, though. They also speak to the unspoken tensions that simmer beneath the surface of many Indonesian families. You see it in the way the sisters, played by Putri Ayudya and Ayushita, look at each other with a mix of love, resentment, and wariness. It's as if they're constantly calculating each other's next move, waiting for the other to crack and reveal their true feelings. The silences in the film become a kind of emotional shorthand, a way to convey the complexities of their relationships without needing to explicitly state them.
